When I started blogging in 2008 I had a few columns on the right side of my web page. One column was labeled WHAT IS FASHION?  I listed quotes of famous and not so famous, fashion related and not fashion related people.  Oscar De La Renta is one of the first people on the list of quotes. His quote:
~’We’re dealing with sophisticated customers. What’s most important to these women is individuality. I have to create things she’ll want to wear, no matter who she is.’

I liked this quote from him because it described how women want to feel valued in the clothing they wear. Women feel valued by dressing uniquely. Not everyone wants to follow trends and wear what everyone else is wearing. This is an important concept to keep in mind when creating something for someone else. There is impact at the end of the quote because he doesn’t just refer to a small amount or certain group of women. No matter who he encounters he is going to create things that make her feel unique.

Fashion can mean a lot of things to different people. In this case fashion can mean: this is me, this is how I describe myself through dress and I am not like anyone else.

I was reminded of this quote after hearing about Oscar De La Renta’s passing so I wanted to share his influence on me. I never met him but this quote and the work he produced left a mark. He set  standard of great quality, taste, and class. If I was ever to be asked, ‘Who is the best designers or your favorite?’ He would be one of the first people to come to mind.
